Whippet of the Week: Keith Slyman

2015-12-15 20.02.01I live in Central New Jersey (about 1 mile from the Rutgers Campus) with my wife Sonya (we will be married 13 years in 2016) and my 2 sons Colin will be 10 this year and Jason who turned 7 in January.

I work for a New York based software company called MaxxVault as a Software Engineer and have done so for the past 4 1/2 years covering most of my clients in Manhattan and Long Island in the field, but as of late I’ve been managing our Support Desk which gives me the opportunity to work out of my home office most days. My company MaxxVault produces an Electronic Document Management Software and our client base covers US, Canada, and New Zealand. I’ve been working with EDM software for the past 21 years as an Engineer. In my life prior to running I raced bikes (Road, Mountain, and Time Trials) for 9 years and in those 9 years I was a 2 Time New Jersey State Champion (2002 Cross Country Mountain BIke and 2010 Team Time Trial). I’ve done 24 hour Mountain Bike Races, Multi Day Stage Races, Road Racing, Track Racing and my true passion in cycling Time Trials.

I joined the Dashing Whippets in February of 2011 after being invited on a Run with Matt and couple of other guys / gals.

I have two major running goals as I age I hang on to them. Number 1 is first and foremost to Qualify for the Boston Marathon and Number 2 is break 1:30 in a Half Marathon.

My training pace lately has been around 7:40ish on shorter runs and 8:00ish on my long days.

Old School Race Photo1Cross Training is a must to try to stay fit being a Master. I try to ride my SPIN bike at least one day a week and I have a weight lifting regime I do at least 2 times a week. 2015 Ted Corbin 15k-1My favorite cross training is my Fixed Gear Road Bike I think it helps with muscular balance in my legs and I see a great difference in my Hamstrings when I get out on it often.

I started running marathons in 2007 after my first son was a year old and I took a year off from Bike Racing and gained 35 lbs. I prepared by riding my bike and some running as I wasn’t in very good shape but I managed to finish in 4:15 and I’ve run 13 Marathons to date.

The New York City Marathon of course is my favorite race with the New Jersey Marathon coming in a very close second.

The best thing about the Dashing Whippets is the Team Spirit if you ever need motivation you just need know where the cheer zone is and you’ll hear them well before you see them.
