Whippet of the Week: Lisa Ying

LisaLisa Ying is partner in 3 women’s fashion and accessories showrooms (theglobeshowroomomarche | theglobegallerie) and a partner in a women’s collection called Tryb212. Her passions are travel, being a food and wine junkie, running of course and her goal for this year is surfing! She really, really wants to surf! She got up for the first time in 2014 and have been wanting to pick it back up ever since, but she had been occupied firmly planted on concrete as she had been training for marathons each year.

Here’s her running story:

I joined the Whippets in 2013 and I have to be honest. I was impressed by the sexy hairy girls cheering on their team! I saw the pictures and said, “I want to be a part of that!”

Whippet LadiesI have attended the Tuesday night CP workout, the Thursday track and the Saturday long runs and they each have their individual pluses, but my favorite is the Saturday long run. It’s the perfect combo of sharing and enduring a great run with like minded runners, coupled with the reward of a yummy breakfast at the end… and all this before 11am!! Honestly though… I couldn’t have made it through my NYC Marathon training without these Saturday morning runs! Those long runs are pretty hard and you know what they say… misery loves company 😉

I am currently training for the Paris Marathon and hoping to sub 4. And one day my dream would be to BQ!

Depending on the distance but I am between 8:30-9:30… and trying to speed up of course… these Whippets are a fast bunch!

For cross-training, I practice yoga regularly and throw in some spin, but I realize in order for me to meet my goal and the goal after that, I need to incorporate more HIIT in my workouts as well… so that’s my goal for 2016!

I’ve ran both the 2014 and 2015 TCS NYC Marathons, and given the unexpected hiccup in 2015, my initial reaction was never again… although there’s that increasingly louder by day whisper in my ear of “Come on… 2016 is waiting for you to redeem yourself!

IMG_3479My pre-race rituals are: Nespresso, EmergenC, Udi’s toast with peanut butter and if I am running a ½ marathon or longer, I will have ramen the night before (which I did not follow this past NYC marathon… and hence the “hiccup”).

On the days that I don’t want to run: Well… I really just talk to myself, then it escalates to yelling at myself (this is playing out all silently inside of my head) to just get dressed and throw myself out of the apartment. No but really, I think of the finish or completion of something that is the opposite of having a bowl of ice cream and if I can do this, what else can I do that day! So I guess you can say I like to be challenged!

Of all the NYRR races, the Brooklyn ½ is my favorite. It’s a fun course and pretty flat, and second to the marathon, has a nice crowd who comes out to cheer us on. Plus, I get to rub my tired feet in the sand afterwards.

I’ve learned over the past couple of years that running is a very patient sport. If you want to hit your goals, you can’t rush it. You have to build slowly, get in your hill and speed workouts, cross train and DO NOT forget to roll and stretch!

My favorite thing about the Whippets is that they are a very friendly bunch of motivators, supporters and as my non running friends call us… crazies. If you need to find a running buddy who will run in 10 degree temp, you’ll find someone… you want to run an ultra… you’ll find someone… you want a beer after a run… yup… you’ll find a lot of them!

For our category: “Whippet of the Week” we’ll introduce some of our running teammates. There are hundreds of Dashing Whippets and we thought that it would be great to share their running goals and what they do when they aren’t running. If you’d like to submit, please email . Follow the instagram @dashingwhippets for #WhippetsWednesday where these runners will be highlighted.
