Hey Whippets!

I hope you are all psyched about this Sunday's race which will be our first NYRR Team Points race of 2010! The forecast looks beautiful and sunny at race start at 38°F (feels like 32°F). This is perfect weather to PR for the shortest race of the year at 5K and vie for that new colored bib. Also, don't forget your Whippets jersey! If you haven't picked up your bib yet, you can do so at New York Road Runners (9 East 89th Street) on:

* Friday, March 5, 1:00-7:00 p.m.
* Saturday, March 6, 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Or on race day at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory, 216 Fort Washington Avenue (West 168th Street), Manhattan, on:

* Sunday, March 7, 7:30-8:30 a.m.

As usual, we'll be meeting at 8:30am at the baggage drop, 30 minutes before the race start of 9:00am. Matt and I will hold a short slow jog to warm up and we'll break into our pacing groups.

Here's a good tip about the race that Patrick shared with me:

It's an out-and-back course with a pretty steep hill that you'll go up about 1/2 mi into the race, then down again. You'll enter Fort Tryon Park just after mile 1 and there will be a descent until the turnaround point. After you hit the turnaround you'll be heading up the incline until you're out of the park. Then you'll pass the mile 2 mark and will have to run up the steep hill you encountered earlier in the race again. After that hill, the worst of it will be over; the course is pretty much flat/downhill until the finish. You can make up a lot of time in the final 1/2 mi of this race so keep that in mind when you're fighting fatigue on those hills.

After the race, we'll be cheering on other Whippets near the finish line so look out for us there. We will meet back up at baggage drop at 9:45am and grab brunch somewhere nearby. (We'll try to brave the free brunch and beer crowds at Coogan's or travel if we can't find some place that can accommodate our group size.)
