Hi, all -- For track specialists and those who love road relays, I want to bring a few upcoming local events to your attention. Click on the links for more details, and note that if you want to do a road relay, you must create your team and register it in advance, rather than taking your chances on spots being left on race day. (For track relay participants, just let us know in the RSVP and we'll get you onto as many relay teams as we can.) - Indoor track meet, Thu Feb 09, 7 p.m. at the NYC Armory: Come out and race the mile, 800m, and/or 3000m on the fast indoor track in Washington Heights. The cost is just $20 cash on race night ($6 for spectators) and you'll be guaranteed to have other Whippets cheering for you on every lap. - Cherry Tree road relay, Sun Feb 19, 10 a.m. in Prospect Park: Form a team with two other athletes -- you will each do one Prospect Park loop (around three and a third miles) and have the fun of passing off a slap bracelet as your baton. - Indoor 10,000m relay, Thu Feb 23, 7 p.m. at the NYC Armory: We're looking for at least twenty people to form two ten-person teams. Each athlete runs five separate "legs" of 200m, with about four minutes of rest between each sprint. - NYC Ekiden road relay, Sun Feb 26, 9 a.m. in Central Park: You'll have to Google "Ekiden" to get the full nuances of this unorthodox Japanese tradition, but in summary, it's a relay run over multiple distances within Central Park, and it sounds like a blast. The cost is $70-$100 per team (two or four runners). - McCarren Park Classic outdoor track meet, Sat Mar 10, 9 a.m. in Williambsurg: After many months of planning, our friends from North Brooklyn Runners are hosting their first track meet. It's just $10 (pre-payment requested) for as many events as you want, and they offer four different relays so that you can team up with your fellow Whippets. - Front Runners indoor track meet, Fri Mar 23, 7 p.m. at the NYC Armory: FRNY has put this on for the past twelve years, and it has always been great fun for athletes of all level of ability. There are more individual events than at a typical NYRR indoor track meet, and as a bonus there are three different relays -- so you have lots of chances to match up with your friends.
