Van Cortlandt Park - Tortoise & Hare Statue (map)
Ho Ho Ho! The Christmas Marathon!
It's a free gift from Santa; from the guys who brought us The Thanksgiving Marathon.
- Marathon (4 loops)
- Half Marathon (2 loops)
- Marathon Relay (whatever loops)
- 10K (1 loop)
- Same 6.55-mile course as the Thanksgiving Marathon
Location:
Meet at the famous Tortoise & Hare statue in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. This is at the Parade Grounds, across the street from Lloyd's Carrot Cakes on 6087 Broadway; walk a few blocks (0.3 miles) north of the last stop on the 1 train, 242nd St. Walking map from station.
Check the Facebook Page and spread the word.
I'm not going to RSVP yes, because I'm jinxed everytime I do :/
That being said, I think it would be cute if two folks dressed up at Mr. and Mrs. Claus and then we had a bunch of elves and reindeer. I would be a reindeer :).
If that's the case, I want to be the abominable snowman.
is this on the calendar yet? I spoke with Mike and Mike at the McArdle 15K (they both did very well) and it looks to be a fun race. They are also doing a secret santa / gift bag swap too so bring something in a bag and, take one home as a random gift. pretty neat.
We're still awaiting for approval of this event for the DW calendar... I'm FREE, off to gift wrapping now.
Jackie: Meetup JUST eliminated the "Maybe" choice w/in the past few days. I actually like it. I'm a Meetup Organizer for another group, and Maybe's give us headaches, haha.

Ohnoes, the MM website says this race doesn't count towards MM stats :/
I signed up for the 10K but a bad influence may make me change my mind *cough* Kino *cough cough*
Lisa: Bad influences also force you to climb up 4 mountains in a single day. Both yours & Jackie's moms have a bounty on my head now.
Jackie: I'm including it in my MM stats, =). It only doesn't count if you're in contention for Maniac of the Year.
Lisa: I think he is a bad influence on all of us :). I am now totally addicted to the trails.
Oh phew, I knew there were peeps who wanted to use this as a MM qualifier :)
This does NOT count for a Maniac qualifier, since they have to approve those. You can list any kind of race you want in your profile (even make stuff up if you want); the problem is if there's any kind of review (i.e., MOTY or new members).
This is similar in style to the Thanksgiving Marathon. You can have them contact the MM's. I think the criteria was that there was an official race director and that the results would be posted.
I became an MM running the Knickerbocker and the Thanksgiving Marathon.
it looks like a decision was made that this calendar would be on the MM Calendar:

But, explicitly says it doesn't count towards stats. Doubtful that they'd change it at this point.
They specifically explained that this race was different from the Thanksgiving Marathon because it was not advertised 30 days in advance, which is why it will not count. It is only on the calendar because Kino and I begged them to add it just for this year, so we could see which other Maniacs are doing it, and they made an exception for the calendar only.
Hey Kino, those coordinates are a bit off. What you have there is Paul Mojaven's place. Nice!
For those of you who plan on plugging an address into your gps, you can use this:
6113 Broadway
Bronx, NY 10471
Directions updated! The old Tortoise & Hare location pointed to Bayside for some messed up reason. I went head and created a new location: http://www.meetup.com/dashing-whippets/venue/1450992/?eve...![]()

Walking directions from 242 St (1) train subway station (it's 0.3mi north up Broadway, across from Lloyd's Carrot Cake on 6087 Broadway): http://tinyurl.com/vc-tortoise-hare![]()
Tommy's GPS address works, or try:
6087 Broadway
Bronx, NY 10471
Laura is right. The MM calendar gatekeeper decided to include the event after Laura & I bugged him and the Prez approved it. I don't think newbies can use this race to qualify (Ellen). Might be worth a shot though? It's a free race.
The race would count for 50 States (http://www.50statesmarathonclub.com/50dc/rules.html![]()
) and 100 Marathon Club, I believe (http://www.100marathonclub.us/join100.htm![]()
).
what makes a race more official? Marathon Maniac status? MarathonGuide.com status? or . . . . Facebook status? RSVP and spread the word everyone!

I need to find something Christmasy to run with... Fatt Ass is isn't enough!!
Too bad this race isn't going toward MM for the newbies. Will do it anyway. And it looks like it's gonna be another Badd Ass group.
I don't think the Thanksgiving Marathon was advertised 30 days in advance. Anyways, think people can still try for MM if you want. You never know.
I applied before the Thanksgiving Marathon results were posted, and was approved and signed up the same day.
Charles; the Thanksgiving Marathon totally slipped in and that was key to my "3 in 68" so . . . maybe that was the exception and they won't do it again for this same group. They are also planning a New Year's Marathon which unfortunately, wouldn't be able to get on the calendar in time either. We'll let Kino and Laura do the talking.
Heard a rumor that the planning committee is also planning a Valentine's/Prez Day marathon, in addition to the New Year's marathon.
They need to start posting them now, so it will actually count...
Word got out on the New Year's Marathon, haha.

i got lucky then.
i like vcpc, but i think running there every holiday is gonna kind of drag.
maybe have a contest and see how many of them in a row kino will do.
I think they should change up the course. At the very least, maybe try reverse direction or something.
I'm down to do it backwards, if anyone else wanna join me.
Charles: My streak will be broken for the New Year's one. I'm running the next day in Mass, instead: http://www.dashingwhippets.org/ideas/574302/![]()

don't worry, you'll be able to pick it right back up: check for V'Day and St. Paddy's Day too in the works.
cool grab bag ideas:
Energy Bars/Gel/Beans ~$8
Body Glide ~$8
Nalgene Water Bottle ~$10
Hydration Tablets ~$7
Hat liners / Winter Hats / Headbands ~$15
Gloves ~$15-20
Hand/Foot Warmers (1pair) ~$2
Reflective or LED Marker Bands ~$13
Massage Balls ~$5
Shoe Wallet ~$13
I think running this backwards would cause some problems. I recall some of the sections being really narrow.
What's the deal with the new year's marathon? Is that happening? There's not much on the website..
The New Year's Marathon is now live: http://www.thenewyearsmarathon.com![]()
megan and kino, they are working on that site, yup. but remember, there was also that informal 20-miler on january 2nd hosted by Grant McKeowan (sp?); I forgot where that was posted up, but it will also be at VCP.
Yes, thanks Jeff! I saw that on New York Ultra Running .. I might do that. Here's the link.. http://www.newyorkultrarunning.org/2011_VanCortParkFatAss...![]()

did you have to sign up way ahead of time? I will probably be so bored on christmas i might want to run a 10k.
Evelyn, signups are totally casual; just show up that morning. all distances start at 11am and they will be handing out race numbers, giving out goodies and also collecting the grab bag swap stuff so definitely come by earlier.

glad everyone could make it out and remember . . . January 1, 2011 . . . . The New Years Marathon! 11am, same deal, same location. Mike & Mike (the organizers) are unstoppable.
I've let MarathonGuide know about it, so they'll hopefully list it too.
