There will be a FREE 50K ultra on Sat 12/11 at Delaware Water Gap, PA.
Delaware Water Gap (DWG) Fatt Ass 50K
http://ultrasignup.co...
As with all Fatt Ass races, it's free, but self-supported (you need to carry your own food & water).
I've registered, but have not decided if I'll run it. December is cold, haha.
To see who else has registered, view:

I like this! I would love to go if people are driving out there. I think I'll register sometime this week.
Actually I registered because there were only 22 spots left (now 21!)
This race is going to fill up quickly. I just posted it to the Maniacs calendar, so I have a feeling the remaining 21 spots will be gone in a week. In other words, REGISTER NOW, if you want to run. I can drive too.
I love how on the UltraSignUp.com predicter page, I'm predicted to place 2nd to last, LOL. http://ultrasignup.com/entrants_event.aspx?did=10494![]()

I had no idea they had stats on me! I guess the North Face marathon doesn't count as an ultra?
A marathon never counts as an ultramarathon...
Ah, I saw a 25KM and 20M so I thought it would...
Registered. Now I just have to get off work. Fingers crossed.
Michelle, we know plenty of people running. Shoot me an email, and I can try to match you with someone for a ride.
8 out of the 38 registrants so far are Whippets!!!
If Michelle & Ellen registered, that would mean 10 out of the 38 are Whippets.
Russ had to drop out, but Marco is in.
I think Emi dropped out, her name is no longer listed: http://ultrasignup.com/entrants_event.aspx?did=10494![]()

Remember to buy trail shoes, spikes (microspikes or Yaktrax), and gaiters!!!
Hey guys, I (sadly) need to cancel too.. I am going to do another shorter race in the morning and be sure I make it to the Whippets party!!
Megan: Sorry to hear. I'll also remove you from the DWG email thread.
yea, i'm out as well... knee issue from the marathon. I def don't be running an ultra!!
Might consider, but the Roxbury Marathon in CT is only $5 and seems like a better course?
Laura: Officially, the race is full w/ 50 registrants (http://ultrasignup.com/entrants_event.aspx?did=10494![]()
). However, try emailing the RD (AlexP at athletic-equation dot com) to see if you can be placed on the waitlist.

good luck gang! be safe on the trails; eyes forward and, really interested to hear some race reports.
Good luck to all, this is madness. someday I grow up and be like you guys. Maniacs.
Great Ultra run, I mean hike, yesterday. It was great to meet everyone. Is anyone else having problems walking down stairs today? :)
Great job everyone! Can't believe I even saw a lot of you at the party post 50K! Makes me feel lazy doing a mere ole training run for Tokyo and not on too many hills even.
Had so much fun with everyone this weekend! You guys are really the best! :)

The stats tell a lot about our odyssey through the mountains & woods of Delaware Water Gap...
50 Entrants, 9 DNS (18%), 16 DNF (39%, really really high for a 50K), 25 Finishers. Median finish time: 8:40 (16:49 min/mile pace).
Wow, awesome job everyone!!
Thanks Megan! Almost everyone's watches died, except for I believe Steve (who had the Garmin Forerunner 305) and Lisa (who has a non-GPS Timex). It was an interesting experience and unforgettable one. I will never look at rocks the same way again. Also the letter combination "AT" strikes fear into me. Would hate to be lost overnight on the Appalachian Trail all alone...
Yikes is right on the AT tip Kino. I'm really happy to see you guys formed a group that stayed together to complete this.
Sounds crazy! Any suggestions for others who might want to run winter ultras?
Honestly, I think a big suggestion would be to do what they did and form a group to support each other and trek together. I don't see how one, especially when new to the sport, could make it by oneself especially with nightfall coming earlier. Yes, I like Megan's comment about winter ultras. Advice?
Make sure to throw extra granola bars & GU's (etc.) into your backpack / Camelpak and carry a cell phone. W/o Rick's extra Fig Newton bar, I would have blacked out. At the final aid station, we couldn't find the hidden water and potato chips, so had to go almost 10 miles w/o a resupply of water and food. Don't be afraid to wear too many layers, but don't overdo it b/c added weight in your sack makes climbing up difficult...
Microspikes are a must if there's going to be snow and/or ice. Be careful when stepping on snow b/c oftentimes, there is ice hidden underneath it (or rocks or roots)!
Also, for ultras, time doesn't matter (unless you're at risk of being cut off). So it's better to travel in pairs or greater than try to blow by everyone on your own.
Well, honestly, part of what I love about ultras is running alone and meeting random people along the trail so maybe I should stick to races where the weather is good :)
What a Bad Ass Race for sure. Thanks Ray for driving us, Leong for make the right decision, definitely better to die on cliff hit by a car!! Great pacing too. Lisa, you saved my hands. What a great team work!!!
Never leave the emergency kit and headlamp behind for ANY reason!!!
There is a great book "A Step Beyond: A Definitive Guide to Ultrarunning" Edited by Don Allison that is excellent for when one is just starting out in Ultras. It has info. on long training runs, tips for downhill trail running, Physiology, etc. You can order it from Ultra Running magazine or I would be happy to loan it out to anyone who is interested.
