Central Park Training Run (December Relay Workout)

Central Park (map)

Selected By: Matthew

For our Tuesday night training runs, we meet at 86th and Fifth Avenue. If you're in need of bag check, you can use NYRR for bag check (closes at 8:00pm) or NYSC (at 86th and Lexington) if you're a member.

The first Tuesday of each month will be a relay workout in Central Park. (Exception: December's relay workout is on Tuesday, Nov. 30.)

Join us for a Whippets relay workout! Why? Because relays are a sneaky way to do long speedwork, which develops faster paces and better endurance for races. It's also fun.

How does it work? You will be part of a team. Each of you will run at least two SEPARATE 1.7-mile Central Park Lower Loops, handing off the baton so that you'll have at least a ten-minute break between your loops. Total distance, when a warmup is included, will be 4-6miles. We will be finished around 8:30.

Make sure you're on time -- meet us at the usual spot on Fifth Ave between 86th and 85th.

Can't find us? Call Rich at 781 - three six seven - eight two four four. Call Scott at 646 - four nine six - two three one two.

    Scott,
Since the footing around the reservoir is pretty bad in the dark and potentially subjects people to ankle sprains, maybe the relay this time can be around the 1.7-mile lower loop? There's good lighting on the road...

Good idea, Alexis.. I often come close to falling on the reservoir at night! Then we get some little hills in too..

Hey, Alexis -- thanks for the suggestion. I'd like to check with the other captains tonight before changing this up. Look for more info later this week.

Hi, Alexis & Everyone -- everyone agreed with your idea of doing loops of the lower part of central park (1.7 miles on pavement in good lighting). From our meeting spot at 86th & Fifth, we'll jog down to 72nd & East Drive, and the relay workout will consist of counterclockwise lower loops. Thanks!

TWO THINGS about tonight's Relay Workout in Central Park. FIRST, we'll be out there even if it's raining. SECOND, we'll START at the usual place (86th/Fifth) but END with stretching at 72nd and the East Drive. See you there!

Had a great time! Sorry I missed the end but that odd spot behind the knee was really aching and I was anxious to get some ice on it. Great to see so many people run the relay! Great job everyone!

This relay race was the closest i've come to playing a team sport in a long time so it was a lot of fun. Alexis, thanks for helping me make it to the finish line faster.
