East River Park Training Run

East River Park (map)

Selected By: Matthew

We currently do workouts on the East River and meet at the track in East River Park east of the FDR at East 6th Street.

We will be doing the prescribed Thursday workout in the 10k program as seen here:

http://files.meetup.c...

10k runners should select a program within the 10k program and marathoners should do the Intermediate Stamina program. The track is a great place to do a workout or to run a few easy miles so don't be intimidated (you don't have to do speedwork if you've never done it before).

Can't find us? Call Scott at 646 - four nine six - two three one two.

10K and Winter Marathon Training Plan for 11/11 (from the training program that is linked above)

  • Beginning/Returning 10K runner: Warmup, then 3-4 repeats of 800m @ current 10K pace, with 4-5 minute active (jogging) recovery between repeats
  • Developing 10K runner: Warmup, then 4-5 repeats of 800m @ current 10K pace, with 4-5 min active recovery
  • Intermediate Stamina 10K runner: Warmup, then 3-4 repeats of 1600m @ 1600 speed pace (3% faster than current 10K pace), with 4 min active recovery
  • Intermediate Fast Twitch runner: Warmup, then 5-6 repeats of 1200m @ 1200 speed pace (4% faster than current 10K pace), with 4 min active recovery
  • Tokyo Marathon runner: Warmup, then 3-4 repeats of 1600m @ half marathon pace, with 4 min active recovery

This Thursday's track workout will be fast repeats at one of three distances depending on the amount of training you've done recently. 800m repeats for Beginning/Returning and Developing runners. 1200m repeats for Intermediate Fast Twitch (better at short than long distance) runners. 1600m repeats for Intermediate Stamina and Marathon runners. See you then!

I won't be able to make it this week (recovering from an injury). Does anyone want to coordinate meeting meat the cube at Astor place to walk to the track this week (at 6:45)?

I will be at the cube at 6:45pm if anyone wants to meet up. If you're not sure what the cube is, here's a link to a photo of it: http://bit.ly/ckuyVm ... it's right across the street from the big Kmart.

Here's another link to the cube: http://bit.ly/bJCOBW I'll see you guys at the track. My right leg is still a bit tender from the marathon so I'm basically coming by to do a few laps and hang.

Does anyone run down to the track along the east river? I run down from 25th street (by the UN school and gas station).

I bike down from W 73rd - through the park to the Apple store then down to 34th and over to the river trail..

If we ride our bike is there a place to put it where we can still see it? (No lock). Thanks.

Hi, Paul -- There's a full-height turnstyle that limits access to the track. (It's like the large turnstyle at an unmanned subway exit.) If you can get your bike through, it will be safe, but it might not be easy to get through it. And there are high fences around the track that make it hard to get in any other way...

I'll be at the cube at 6:45. If you want to meet earlier I get to Grand Central around 6:30 and take the 6 train down.

We just leave our bags on the side of the track, it's safe, we can see them while on the track. I will be at the cube too!
