10 day forecast I'd sunny with a high of 57! Looking good!
I'll go to the expo either Thursday or Friday evening.
Hey I just got my expo assignment and I will be working at the expo the following times-- please come visit! My number is 917-592-4333 if you want to find me:
NYRR booth:
Thurs 11/4- 2:00-8:30pm
Friday 11/5- 2:30-8:30pm
TFK booth (#704)
Saturday 11/4- 8:00-1:30pm.
I am there like all the time so there's no excuse not to see me! hahaha. If you don't see me, call me as I might be on break or something.
Lisa, I'll see you Thursday around 6pm!! I think Betsy too.. And maybe Saturday for some autographs!!
I was riding a taxi this morning and saw a video of the NYRR NYCM 5 Boro Challengers. Guess what? There was Paul on the screen of my taxi!!! SO COOL.
Reminder: Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday morning. What does this mean? Clocks "fall back", so we get an extra 1 hour of sleep!!!
Information on the expo is here: http://www.ingnycmarathon.org/expo.htm
. Remember that you have to bring a photo ID and your printed registration card in order to get your bib. It specifies "printed" so I don't know if showing it on your iPhone screen will count (better to be on the safe side and bring a printed one).
iPhone will not work, from what I was told, it does have to be a hard copy.
NYC Marathon runners looking to spend some time off their feet on Saturday, November 6, could do worse than to plop down on their sofas and tune in to THIRTEEN (the local PBS station).
At 2:30 p.m. that afternoon, the station will play Run For Your Life, a pretty cool (and inspirational) documentary on Fred Lebow, the tireless — and sometimes controversial — founder of the New York City Marathon.
Cool, great movie!
forecast now says 40-ish and windy at the start. Better have some throwaway layers.
hey all, i made a pacing spreadsheet to help out the spectators figure out where we'll be! please fill in your name, start time, estimated marathon time and the rest should get filled in automatically. i'll send the form over to our superfans sometime later this week. thanks all! https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AtOtyrSa1dHfdHJGS...![]()

Cool Rich. I just added mine and put Sam, Jeff, and Andrew in with me since we'll be starting together and I think we'll all go for 3:05 (right guys?).
Since the training run is cancelled tonight, please join us at the expo tonight if you can! RSVP here: http://www.dashingwhippets.org/calendar/15339981/![]()

I went to the expo during lunch and have the fevah...marathon fevah. If I don't get to see all of you before the marathon, enjoy every step of it. It's the marathon the whole world wants to run. If you are spectating, I thank you in advance. Seeing a familiar face, if only for a few seconds, really keeps us going for miles. I can't wait to hear about everyones run over some beers! ahhhh beers.
Hey Whippets! I'm going to be sending out a mega e-mail about the where the team will be on Sunday (fans, runners, beer stops). Just a heads up that we'll be at the Open Start area marked on this map probably starting at 7:00am. It'll be cold so it'll be nice to stay warm together as a group: http://www.dashingwhippets.org/photos/1138116/![]()

Hi everyone,
I'll be cold on Sunday so remember to bring some throwaway layers, especially since you'll be checking bags about an hour before your start time. Last year, I wore my brother's old down jacket and chucked it right before the start line. They donate all the clothes they collect at the start so it's for a good cause too.
Good luck!
From a friend:
"Those who are going to use the Ferry on Sunday,
There is NO #1 train service between 14th st and South Ferry.
To get to South Ferry
Take the 4, 5 or R Train to Whitehall Terminal.
Or
Take the 2 or 3 Train to Chambers St. and then take the free shuttle from Chamber st to South Ferry."
Sonia: It's actually a myth that NYRR donates the clothes. It's too labor intensive for them to wash all the clothes, and unwashed clothes cannot be given to charity. It's a sad truth, but it's all thrown out.
FYI: There is NO Family Reunion Area after the Marathon this year.
Kino, are you sure about the clothing thing? I thought I read that on some NYRR materials, and I thought I remembered the volunteers saying it when they took our stuff last year...
Also, HOORAY for no family reunion area - hopefully will make it a thousand times easier to get out of the park.
Kino: Are you serious? So they're lying about it on their website? Still worth it to be warm though!
Discarding Clothes
The start area may be cold, wet, and/or windy, so we advise that you wear extra layers of "disposable" clothing to keep warm and then discard just before the start in the marked bins. Because you will check your baggage well before the actual start of the race, do not check this clothing in your baggage. We will collect this clothing and donate it to needy organizations.
I think you guys are both correct. The stuff that gets collected near the start get cleaned and donated. The clothes that people throw on the ground/streets after the start, get sweeped up by NYC Sanitation and thrown out (too much work for them to sort through, among the trash). This is what I recall reading somewhere.
Kino, I am fairly certain that the clothing is donated or has been in the past. One of my shelters received some of it.
Ah, I think Tommy's explanation is the most accurate. Sorry for my bad info!
You are all my inspiration. May everyone have a swift and successful Marathon. Go Whippets!
I will be in tomorrow's New York Times, page D4!

Laura, that is very, very cool! BTW, how did you meet him and find out about the bet?
I sent a Facebook message and then his agent got in touch with me and set it all up. We ran together a few times when he was in town for the US Open, but since then I've just been training him virtually.
Just a reminder to meet here tomorrow morning if you like: http://www.dashingwhippets.org/photos/1138116/![]()

Emi had a good idea to bring a garbage bag to sit on for the start in case the ground is wet!
Way too cold out at our meeting spot. Matt, Patrick, Emi, Sam and I are in blue area, right tent, near the back right entrance to the tent.
Great job to all the runners and spectators today (I got to do a little of both today and it was really inspiring)! I'll post results tomorrow!
Good job, everyone! Now it is time to recover.

If you want to get your medal engraved, you can head to Niketown for a complimentary massages, shirt customization, free medal engraving, and commemorative prize today till 1PM. http://inside.nike.com/blogs/nikerunning_events-en_US/201...![]()
Congrats to everyone who raced yesterday!
Thanks for the info Rich. I couldn't find the free engraving info on that Nike site. I only know of the NYRR medal engraving service (for a fee), today until 2:30pm.

The one at niketown is broken. If you go to Crown Trophy on 38th bt 5th & 6th and let them know you you had gone to Nike, they'll engrave for free. Doesn't have to be today just this week.
Crown Trophy, http://www.yelp.com/biz/crown-trophy-new-york![]()

(between 5th Ave & Madison Ave), (212) 532-4500, crowntrophy.com.
Woohoo! Thanks for the info Char.
So, as you all heard over the loudspeakers, only the clothes that were disposed of in Fort Wadsworth (before the start line) was cleaned and donated to charity. The rest was discarded, =(.
I remember reading about this in Liz Robbin's book on the 2007 NYC Marathon, "A Race Like No Other", http://www.harpercollins.com/books/Race-Like-No-Other-Liz...![]()

I can't tell if this was already posted since there's been a lot of activity recently, but this time elapse video is cool:

there's an article in today's wall street journal about potentially re-doing the course to make it a faster race. we can only hope they'll reconfigure it. but i think most people would want to hit all 5 boroughs. anyway, congrats to everyone who did it.
I was at the finish line at 10am until I moved to the 26 Mile Marker at about 6pm (didnt want anyone to be left behind). I cannot tell you how great it was to marshal this event and root you guys on. I saw several of our Whippets finish and started screaming our group name at them.
You must have seen and thought who the hell is that hahaha??
I just want to say CONGRATULATIONS and it was amazing to see all of you finish and to know that with determination what we can really accomplish.
Race photos are up on brightroom! http://www2.brightroom.com/event.aspx?eid=62039![]()

I think Brightroom still has some kinks to straighten out. They are showing the wrong photos for some of the runners.
Adam: Here's the WSJ article ( http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405274870463570457...![]()
). I highly doubt this new course would happen. Gotta represent all 5 Boros, you know? The proposed 2012 failed NYC Olympic course makes for a nice long run idea though.
Sonia: Thanks for the preliminary Brightroom link! All: Just plug in your bib #, instead of mine: http://www2.brightroom.com/browser.aspx?eid=62039&bib...![]()

Call me perverted, but I like a difficult course every now and then. Besides, what fun would it be if we took all the hilly courses and flattened them out so that they are all alike? If we made the course easier, instead of 120,000 people applying, you'll end up with 150,000 applicants. Is that necessarily a good thing?
Ion, I am! However, my sister is running and I may try and sneak to line up with her.
I will be at Happy hour afterwards though. :)
