This is a points race! Make sure to sign up under the dashing whippets when you register. This runs uphill toward the cloisters and then back downhill.
To register, go here: http://nyrr.org/races/2010/r0307x00.asp![]()
Don't forget to sign up. First team points race of the year and your first beer on me at Coogan's afterward!
You got it! I'm in it to win it for the Whippets this year!
I've always wanted to run this race, but I'm missing it because I'm running the Disney Princess Half-marathon on this day! Will be there in spirit =)
I'm volunteering at packet pick-up on Saturday morning (10:30 - 1:30 shift). Stop by and say hi! I won't be opposed to anyone who would like to drop off baked goods either since that's during lunch hours.
I ran this race last year. For those running for the first time and wondering what to expect: all the talk about hills are true. It's out-and-back, but the climbs going out are definitely rough. There's climbs coming back as well, so try to pace yourself well in the first half! It's a fun race. Crowds come out and cheer on the streets and there's bands along the route as well. Has a 'mini-marathon' vibe to it. Very festive. Coogan's gets crowded quick, so try to get there as soon as you finish!
I'm registering tonight but what's this points race thing? I have a slow pace, is it going to be bad for the team if I select Dashing Whippets when I register because I'm slow?
Hey Olivia, don't worry, you can't possibly hurt the team, no matter what your time! Definitely sign up under the team name.

I found this elevation map for the course on Sunday that someone posted on the Runner's World forum. Hope it helps! http://sitelife.runnersworld.com/ver1.0/Content/images/st...![]()

Wow that is a terrifying elevation map. My knee hurts just looking at it.
Should I be scared? I def will not PR for sure. I'll see you this sat benny boo boo and bring you some baked goodies.
any trained medics for possb leg spasms and/or shortness of breathe whilst climbing-up then rolling down the hillz
Preventive medicine! Low consumption of hard liquor the day off or before. Wine and beer Ok. Water might help with the muscle spasm and cramps.
Take Iron if you have shortness of breath when you run or are doing any other challenging physical activities...its what jussst started doing like a week ago and I can already tell how much its helped. :)
Good tip Sylvain, thanks! haha
Wow, I did not intend to scare everyone with that elevation map! I just wanted everyone to have an idea what to expect. It really is not that bad. You can all do this! Just take it in as any other race. And it's a shorter race than what you are used to so it should all balance out. RELAX!!! :-)
If anybody needs a bib pickup for the race. Im going to NYRR @ 5:00 today. You can text or email me @ mike.armstrong521@yahoo.com if you want me to get your race stuff. I'll be @ bagcheck early on race morning so you can get your stuff.

I'll be driving from Williamsburg and picking up one other Whippet at the Graham ave. subway stop around 7:30-ish -- there's room for another 2 if anyone needs a ride.
I'm a complete dork, I know, but I just checked the hills on Map My Run- it's something I've been wondering about anyway. The steepest climb on this run ascends 100 ft. over about 0.2 miles, with a little dip in the middle (which should help a lot)
Harlem hill, for comparison, ascends 115ft over 0.2 miles with no dip. Prospect park ascends 100 ft, but over a full mile.
So think of it as a Harlem Hill, just not quite as bad.
Jess, that little insight has quelled some of my fear. Get ready to PR, everyone!
Will sign up soon. Hopefully the weather will be nice. Jess and I plan on dropping by the cloiters after brunch if anyone is interested in joining us.
