Getting to Know Strava

By the Dashing Whippets

In 2016, The Dashing Whippets Running Team has adopted Strava as our online training and community-building platform.

So far, 210 of our teammates are actively using Strava exploring the full functionality of Strava’s powerful technology. We are hoping to reach 300 members by the end of the year.

Here’s how to get started with Strava and some fun things you can do with it.

  1.  screen-shot-2016-09-26-at-7-32-14-pmJoin Strava and download the app. It’s free and easy. Connect your Facebook accounts and contacts to Strava to follow other people in your network on Strava.
  1.  Join the Dashing Whippets Club page on Strava, and start following teammates! Soon, your teammates will start following you as well. If you have any difficulty joining the team’s Strava group, send a note to our team moderator, Tom Flanagan.

(And — stay tuned for a blog post on the ten Dashing Whippets you should be following).

  1. screen-shot-2016-09-26-at-7-29-33-pm If you train with a GPS device, link your Garmin or other GPS watch to your Strava account by going to https://strava.com/upload/device. If you have a Garmin and you want to upload past activities to Strava, there is a good third-party tool for doing this located here: http://www.copymysports.com/

Strava supports all major GPS device manufacturers. For more information on your particular device, check out this helpful article.

If you don’t have or always use a GPS device, you can also track your runs using the GPS on the Strava mobile app or enter a manual run or other workout (spinning, weights, etc.)

  1.  Once you connect a GPS device to Strava, your workouts should upload automatically. You can then name your workout, check out your stats, tag it as a workout or long run, and see if you’ve earned any trophies on a Strava segment. You can even add running shoes to your Strava profile so you can track how many miles you’ve run on each pair.

Definitely add a photo of the banana-walnut muffin (or in this case, something delicious that Jason Wah had on his profile).
  1.  Give people Kudos and comments on their runs and races. Kudos are Strava’s version of a “like.”
