A Whippet Farewell…

“I run… because I love to run & [it’s] great to be part of a team”  P.S.

Sometimes, we must pause to take stock…

Robert, it was so great to meet your family… I felt honored. They told us of how much you loved being a part of our club and that you were your very best self when you were running. I took a lot from that, both on a personal and professional level. As someone that’s also been to some dark places, I know that running races provides an opportunity to show others and yourself just what you are truly capable of. I’ll never find the words to describe how good it felt to complete the marathon. Moreover, I’m lucky enough to work in running, giving kids and adults that same opportunity to be their best selves. Thank you for inspiring me with that.

I’ll miss you my friend, I can only think of you and smile, you were one funny bastard.” Simon Durkin

“Rob, I’m dedicating my 2013 ING NYC Marathon to you this year. I feel honored to have been your Dashing Whippets teammate and fellow Maniac. You made a whole lot of people smile, and I remember sharing great times with you in the Fairfield Half and a whole slew of NYRR races. I’m so in awe that you qualified for Boston and ran it the year it was so hot–I remember you giving me a thumbs-up when I saw you while volunteering at a water station. I hope to run Boston one day just like you. Rest in peace, my friend.” Lisa Cao

“For those of you who don’t know how the nickname “Handsome Rob” came about, here’s the story behind that.

When I got to know Rob better, I realized that this guy was the real deal, a true P.I.M.P. A Jedi Master of a ladies’ man. Then I thought to myself, ‘Wow, he’s like the real life version of Jason Statham’s character “Handsome Rob” in the movie The Italian Job.’ He also kinda of looks like him too, with the “receding hairline” and all. But poor Rob had never seen the movie, because he was just to busy being the ladies’ man that he was, so I had to try to explain the damn thing to him, and it just didn’t work. So then I had him watch this clip:

Upon watching the clip, he says to me, ‘OK, I don’t look anything like that guy. Besides, I have way more hair than him!’

Regardless, from that point on, he was Handsome Rob.” Tommy Sung Pyon

Rest easy, Whippet…

Rob
